Appliance Manufacturers: Pay Attention to Smart Grid

While home appliance manufacturers have had to create very sophisticated control algorithms to achieve unprecedented energy efficiency, at least the manufacturers retained exclusive control over their algorithms. Yet under “Smart Grid”, electric utilities and home network systems want to manage thesupply and timing of power to these appliances, in effect controlling the on/off button remotely. This could jeopardize appliance performance and cause consumers to blame the appliance manufacturer, especially for “Grid Friendly” appliances. Appliance manufacturers should be a major player at the Smart Grid policy table.
